Your Voice Doesn’t Need to Fit the Song — You Make the Song Fit You
Sep 11, 2025
Ever felt like your voice “just doesn’t suit” a certain song you love? In this episode, we’re flipping that idea completely. Discover why you get to decide how a song should sound and how to make any song fit your voice, not the other way around.
Why “finding the right song” is keeping you stuck
We’ve been told for years: choose songs that fit your range, your tone, your voice type. Sounds like solid advice, right? But here’s the thing — that advice is exactly what keeps most singers from growing.
Because trained singers don’t find songs that suit their voice. They make songs suit their voice.
When you approach songs with this mindset shift, something powerful happens: instead of being limited by what your voice “can’t” do yet, you start building the skills and freedom to sing anything.
Step 1: Start with what you want to sing
This might sound simple, but it’s huge. Don’t ask yourself, “What fits my voice?” Ask, “What do I love to sing?”
So many singers avoid songs they’re passionate about because they think it’s “not for their voice.” But when you love the song, you’ll want to work through the challenges. You’ll stick with it. And that’s where real growth begins.
Step 2: Adjust the key — and no, it’s not cheating
If a song feels too high or too low, change the key. Yes, really.
Whether you move the song up or down a step, the vocal challenge stays the same — you’re just moving it into a range where your voice can shine. This is about finding the sweet spot of your voice so you can sing with more ease and impact.
And no, you’re not “less of a singer” for doing this. You’re being smart.
Step 3: Make the melody yours
Think you have to sing every single note exactly like the original artist? Think again.
Small tweaks to the melody — a different phrasing, a soft riff, or a variation on the chorus — can turn a cover into your song. You’re not avoiding difficulty here. You’re shaping the song to match your interpretation and vocal identity.
This is where creativity meets technique.
Step 4: Choose the voice color that fits your vision
Let’s say the original song is belty and powerful — but you hear it in a soft, intimate tone. Great! Use a different voice color. One singer in our community did this by singing a Jessie J song in mix voice instead of full belt, and the result was magical.
You don’t have to copy. You get to create.
Step 5: Tell your story through the lyrics
Doing research on what a song means to the original artist is great. But here’s the better question: What does this song mean to YOU?
Maybe Adele wrote it about a breakup, but you feel it as a song about missing a friend, or a loved one who passed, or a different kind of loss entirely. Your personal connection to the lyrics — that’s what makes a performance powerful.
Let’s recap: 5 steps to make any song yours
-
Choose a song you love. Forget what’s “suitable” — follow your joy.
-
Adjust the key to match your vocal sweet spot.
-
Play with the melody to reflect your interpretation.
-
Use a voice color that fits your version of the song.
-
Tell your story through the lyrics.
This is how you stand out. This is how you find your authentic voice — and use it.
