The Secret Weapon That Got Me Singing in Public Without Feeling Self-Conscious

If the thought of singing in public makes your heart race, your hands shake, or your voice crack—trust me, I get it. For years, I let fear hold me back from sharing my voice. That was until I discovered a secret weapon that completely transformed how I approached singing in front of others.

In this episode, you'll discover what that secret weapon is, so you too can sing confidently in front of people without fear, tension, or self-doubt.

Why Confidence Doesn’t Come From Perfect Technique

I used to think, “If I just become a better singer, then I’ll feel confident enough to sing in public.” But even after working on my vocal technique, I still felt the nerves, the stress, the self-doubt.

Here’s the truth: confidence doesn’t come only from vocal control. It comes from a combination of three key elements:

  1. Vocal technique

  2. Inner trust

  3. Authentic expression

Most singers only focus on technique—or worse, push themselves into scary performance situations hoping they’ll just “get used to it.” But without the right tools, that can backfire and reinforce the belief that you're not ready.

Step 1: Build Your Vocal Technique Backpack

Think of your vocal skills like a Mary Poppins-style backpack. Fill it with tools like:

  • Breath support

  • Mix voice

  • Chest and head voice coordination

  • Vocal effects like twang, cry, vocal fry, and more

These are the tools you can pull out when needed. The more familiar they become—through repetition and muscle memory—the more automatic they’ll feel, especially when you’re under pressure. And that builds trust in your voice.

Step 2: Add Creative Parachutes

Vocal technique is your foundation. Creative tools? Those are your parachutes.

Imagine being in the middle of a performance and forgetting your lyrics. If you have creative techniques in your toolbox, you can improvise, tell a story, or lean into emotional expression—and still land safely.

One powerful parachute? Improvisation.
It’s not just for jazz. You can practice creating your own melodies, playing with vowel sounds, and exploring musical freedom without fear of “messing up.”

And just like vocal technique, creativity can be trained. When you know you have options, your confidence skyrockets.

Step 3: Train Your Nervous System to Trust the Moment

Singing in public can feel like a threat to your nervous system. That’s not just in your head—it’s your body’s survival system kicking in.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Your brain sees performing as a threat

  • It activates your fight-flight-freeze response

  • You feel shaky, your mouth goes dry, and your voice feels unstable

The solution? Nervous system regulation and core belief work.

We need to help our body feel safe while singing. That might look like grounding exercises, breathwork, or gentle movement before singing. And on a deeper level, we get curious about the core beliefs that are triggering the fear. Where did those fears come from? What stories are you carrying about being seen or heard?

Your Secret Weapon: The Vocal Freedom Trio

When you combine these three elements—technique, creative freedom, and inner trust—you unlock your full vocal potential. This is what I call the Vocal Freedom Method. It’s how I went from hiding my voice to singing with confidence in front of others.

And the best part? You can learn to do this too.
