Power and Effort are the Worst Way to Sing High Notes Easily

vocal technique Oct 02, 2025

Most singers try to force high notes with more volume, more breath, more push. But what if I told you that all that effort is actually holding you back? In this episode, I’ll show you what to do instead and walk you through the surprising truth about singing high notes with ease and power. Let’s get going.

The Problem with Pushing

We’ve been conditioned to believe that powerful high notes require brute force: more volume, more breath, more chest voice. Maybe you’ve even had a choir director yell “Give me more!” when aiming for the top of your range.

I’ve been there too. It’s easy to assume that because someone else sounds powerful up high, they must be belting or pushing their chest voice. So we try to copy it… and end up in vocal tension, hoarseness, or even injury.

But here’s the truth: most of those high, powerful notes you hear? They’re not full chest voice.
They’re mix voice.

What Is Mix Voice, Really?

Mix voice is the blend of your chest voice and head voice working together. It combines the power and vocal fold closure of chest voice with the stretch and range of head voice.

Let’s break it down:

  • Chest voice muscle (TA muscle): Brings the vocal cords together = strong, powerful tone.

  • Head voice muscle (CT muscle): Lengthens the vocal cords = thinner folds = higher pitch.

Singers often say, “I don’t want to flip into head voice — it sounds too weak!” And they’re not wrong. Pure head voice lacks the depth and punch we often want. But mixing the two vocal muscle systems? That’s where the magic happens.

The Real Secret to Strong High Notes

You don’t need to push chest voice higher. You do need to train both muscle systems to work together.

Here’s the 3-step breakdown:

  1. Activate your chest voice. Feel the vocal cords closing and creating power.
    Example: low, strong “Power!”

  2. Activate your head voice. Stretch those cords and sing higher pitches.
    Example: light, floaty head tones.

  3. Blend both for mix voice. Use cord closure from chest voice and lengthening from head voice.
Result: strong, resonant, effortless high notes that sound powerful but feel free.

That’s mix voice. And no, it’s not just “pushing head voice.” It’s a whole new coordination — and it’s trainable.
