My Vocal Training Routine for Better Singing
Sep 18, 2025
If your voice feels tight, unpredictable, or tired after singing — even though you do warm up — you're not alone. In this episode, you're going to discover the exact vocal training routine I use myself and teach to the singers I coach. It's a simple but powerful 3-step process to help you sing with more freedom, less tension, and way more confidence.
Why Just Warming Up Isn’t Enough
Let’s start with a big myth: many singers think a quick warm-up is all they need before diving into songs. But when you skip real training, your voice can start to feel fatigued or inconsistent. You might even start believing that your voice “just isn’t made for singing” — which is absolutely not true.
Inside the Singing Insiders, we teach a structured approach to vocal training that actually develops your voice — not just warms it up. In this episode, I’m breaking it down into three essential steps so that even if you only have five minutes a day, you’ll still make real progress.
Step 1: Gently Wake Up Your Voice
The first step is all about warming up — and not just vocally, but physically too. Think of it like preparing your vocal muscles the same way an athlete would prepare for a race. When singers skip this step or rush through it, their voice often feels stiff or unstable — and that can even lead to vocal injury over time.
So what does a good warm-up include? Hydration, stretching your vocal cords, using SOVT (semi-occluded vocal tract) exercises, and prepping your chest, mix, and head voice. If you’re a Singing Insider, you’ll find tons of guided warm-ups in your Vocal Workout Library. Just pick one and follow along — even in your car or on a walk. This step is all about waking up the voice in a healthy way.
Step 2: Train Your Voice with Intention
This is the step most singers skip — and it’s where the real growth happens.
Training your voice doesn’t mean just singing songs and hoping you get better. That’s like going to the gym, walking on the treadmill for five minutes, and calling it a workout. Instead, we want to target specific vocal techniques — like breath support, vocal cord closure, or releasing tension in the tongue — and build them into what I call your “Vocal Technique Backpack.”
Each time you focus on one skill, you’re adding a tool to that backpack. And later, you can pull out the right technique when you need it most. Even just five focused minutes a day on one technique can move the needle way more than singing songs without any awareness of what’s going on technically.
Step 3: Apply What You Learned Into a Song
Here’s the final — and crucial — step: application.
Many singers can do an exercise really well… until they sing an actual song. That’s because the bridge between training and performance is missing. So here’s how to fix that:
Pick a short section of a song you love (especially one you find tricky — like the high chorus or low verse). Then go into your Vocal Technique Backpack and pull out one skill — say breath support — and apply it to that section. If it helps: awesome. If it doesn’t quite solve it, try another technique, like mix voice or vocal cord compression.
Over time, you’ll figure out which techniques help in which situations. You’ll start slowing songs down, breaking them apart, and rebuilding them with intention. And eventually, these techniques become part of your muscle memory — meaning you won’t have to think about them at all. That’s when the real magic happens.
Practice Smarter, Not Harder
Better singing doesn’t come from random warm-ups or hoping you hit that note today. It comes from intentional, focused, and structured training — even if it’s just five minutes a day. This 3-step method helps you wake up your voice, build technique, and actually use it in songs.
If you’re a passionate singer, and you're struggling with hoarseness, tension or straining while singing — despite your best effort to practice — I'd love to show you how to sing powerful high notes and expand your range without straining, tension, or hoarseness… so that you can sing all your favorite songs with ease and confidence.
