How to Stop Panic from Taking Over When You’re About to Sing

performance Aug 07, 2025

Do your nerves take over the second you're about to sing in front of someone else? Whether it’s karaoke with friends or a solo in your choir, you’re not alone. In this episode, we’re diving into two simple but powerful tools that will help you feel grounded, calm, and confident so your voice can shine when singing in public!

Why “Just Push Through” Doesn’t Work

Most singers believe that the more they perform, the less anxious they’ll feel. That sounds logical, right? But if your body is still interpreting singing in public as dangerous, doing it more often can actually make things worse. You end up reinforcing the message that performing equals panic—which just leads to more stress and shaky performances.

Tool #1: Regulate Your Nervous System

You can’t think your way out of performance anxiety. If you’ve ever tried telling yourself, “You’ve got this, you’re prepared,” while your body is screaming RUN, you know what I mean. The real shift happens when you use your body to calm your brain. In this episode, I share how nervous system regulation—like breathwork or a simple meditation—can send a new signal to your brain: “Hey, this is safe.” That’s when your voice can finally relax and come through the way you want it to.

Tool #2: Let Go of Perfectionism

Another trap? Obsessing over vocal technique. Don’t get me wrong—technique is so important. But many singers get stuck thinking, “I can’t perform until my mix voice is flawless,” or “I’m not ready yet.” That kind of perfectionism is actually fear in disguise. In this episode, I explain how the real growth comes when you do the thing, even if it’s not perfect. You don’t wait until you’re “ready”—you perform, learn, and adjust. That’s how confidence is built.

The Sweet Spot of Vocal Freedom

When nervous system regulation meets vocal technique and authentic expression, that’s where magic happens. You sing freely, expressively, and in tune—not just at home, but on any stage. That’s what I call vocal freedom, and it’s absolutely possible for you.
