Avoid Vocal Damage by Implementing This One Training Tip
Oct 30, 2025You might be wondering how you can avoid vocal damage by implementing one crucial training tip that most singers overlook. In this episode, you’ll discover a mindset and technique shift I call Reflecting Feedback, a simple yet powerful way to protect your voice and make consistent progress without ending up hoarse, tense, or frustrated.
Why So Many Singers Damage Their Voices Without Realizing
When I ask singers how their voice feels after practice, I often hear: “Oh, a bit tense or hoarse, but that’s normal.” 🚩 Red flag! That is not normal. Tension and hoarseness are signs from your body — signals that something isn’t aligned. Ignoring them and “pushing through” only leads to vocal fatigue or injury.
Another common mistake is relying solely on external feedback (from coaches, apps, or friends) — or worse, having no feedback at all. When that happens, you never truly develop internal awareness of how your voice feels and sounds when it’s healthy.
The Key: Training Awareness Instead of Singing on Autopilot
Great singers don’t just train their voices — they train their awareness. They know exactly how their voice feels in the moment and can adjust before damage occurs.
Here’s how you can start:
👉 During your vocal practice, use what I call the Awareness Scale — from 1 to 10.
Before, during, and after your practice, ask yourself:
-
How does my voice sound right now?
-
How does my voice feel right now?
A 1 means your voice feels hoarse, tense, limited — not good.
A 10 means it feels free, supported, and effortless — amazing.
If you’re at a 7 or below, that’s a gentle warning sign to pause, reflect, and adjust your singing using your technique tools.
Build Your Vocal Technique Backpack 🎒
Now, this is where your Vocal Technique Backpack comes in — a metaphor for all the tools you collect along your singing journey. Each technique you learn becomes a resource you can reach for when something feels off.
Just like artists have drawing techniques like shading or perspective, singers have their own tools: breath support, twang, cry, mix voice, vocal fry, and more. These techniques build upon one another, creating a foundation for a healthy and expressive voice.
So when you notice your awareness scale dropping below 7, that’s when you pause, open your backpack, and ask:
-
“Which tool can help me right now?”
Maybe you need more breath support.
Maybe you need to add twang to relieve strain.
Or maybe you just need to realign your posture.
That’s how trained singers prevent vocal damage — they listen, adjust, and refine in real time.
Fill Your Backpack Before You Need It
Here’s the truth: you can only make those adjustments if you already have the tools in your backpack. That’s why building a strong foundation in vocal technique is so important. Most singers wait until something feels wrong before they start learning how to fix it — but by then, it’s often too late.
So instead, let’s get ahead of it. Let’s fill your backpack with the right techniques now, so you can sing freely, powerfully, and without strain later.
