5 Things to Avoid When Trying to Sing with Confidence

confidence Nov 13, 2025

So, you might be wondering how to sing with confidence without feeling overwhelmed, frozen by nerves, or sabotaging your performance. In this episode, you'll discover five key things to avoid so you can step on stage or sing in front of others feeling prepared and connected. Let's dive in!

Why Confidence Isn’t Just About Practice

Many singers think the more they perform, the less nervous they’ll be. While that can be true, it’s not always the case. If you constantly push yourself too far out of your comfort zone, you end up in what I call the panic zone. Your body goes into fight, flight, or freeze mode, and that experience reinforces self-doubt.

Instead, aim for your growth zone — that sweet spot between comfort and panic. Maybe it’s recording yourself and sharing it with a few trusted friends, or joining a small jam night instead of a big stage. The more time you spend in your growth zone, the more your confidence expands naturally.

Mistake #1: Pushing Yourself into Panic Mode

Performing in your panic zone doesn’t make you stronger — it just teaches your body that singing equals fear. When you repeatedly perform in a state of stress, your nervous system remembers that tension. You might freeze, forget lyrics, or lose control of your voice.

Growth happens one stretch at a time. If your panic zone is singing in front of a hundred people, maybe your growth zone is singing at an open mic or for a small group of friends. Each time you step into that middle zone, your comfort zone expands — and what once felt terrifying starts to feel natural.

Mistake #2: Focusing Only on Vocal Technique

Yes, vocal technique matters — breath support, control, resonance, placement, all of it. But if that’s all you focus on, you risk falling into perfectionism and missing two key ingredients: nervous system regulation and authentic expression.

You can master every technical exercise in the book, but if your body tightens up from nerves or if you disconnect emotionally from your song, your performance won’t land. Singing confidently means taking a holistic approach — where technique, emotion, and self-regulation all work together.

Mistake #3: “Fake It Till You Make It”

We’ve all heard the phrase fake it till you make it, but in singing, that approach backfires. Audiences can sense when something feels inauthentic. Instead of pretending you’re not nervous, what if you shared a bit of honesty?

Imagine stepping on stage and saying, “This is my first time performing live, and I’m a little nervous but really excited.” Instantly, the audience is on your side. Vulnerability creates connection. You don’t need to fake confidence — you need to be real.

Mistake #4: Chasing Perfection

Perfectionism is one of the biggest confidence killers. When you obsess over every tiny detail, one small mistake can send your mind spiraling, and suddenly your entire performance feels ruined.

The antidote? Trust.
Trust that you’ve prepared.
Trust that your voice will show up for you.
Trust that your audience is there to cheer you on, not to judge you.

Confidence doesn’t come from being flawless — it comes from trusting yourself even when things aren’t perfect.

Mistake #5: Winging It

“I’ll just see how it goes.” Sound familiar? Many singers walk into a performance underprepared, thinking improvisation will carry them through. But for anxious or self-critical singers, lack of preparation only fuels more stress.

Preparation is freedom.
Warm up your voice, rehearse your song, know your lyrics and transitions, plan your stage movement, and visualize the performance. Prepare everything that’s in your control — and then, once you’re ready, let go of what you can’t control, like how others react or how loud the applause will be.

When you’ve done your part, the best thing you can do is surrender and enjoy.

Confidence Is a Whole-Body Practice

Singing isn’t just about hitting the right notes — it’s about aligning your body, mind, and heart. Confidence comes from a combination of technique, trust, and emotional connection.

That’s exactly what I teach through the Vocal Freedom Method — a holistic approach that helps you understand your voice, regulate your nerves, and perform with authentic confidence.
