3 Singing Beliefs I had for Years That Were Wrong

confidence Jun 12, 2025

Have you ever believed something about singing that felt true, only to realize later it was completely wrong? You’re not alone. In this episode, I’m sharing the top three limiting beliefs I held onto for years that seriously delayed my vocal growth—so you can avoid the same mistakes.

Belief #1: “You Either Have Talent or You Don’t”

This was a big one for me. I used to think that unless you were born with natural talent, you’d never be a great singer. I looked at classmates who seemed to “just have it,” and I assumed I’d never measure up. But over time, I realized something powerful: singing is a skill. Just like swimming or drawing, it’s something you can learn and get better at with the right tools and consistent practice.

In fact, I saw over and over again how the so-called “trained singers” who showed up and put in the work ended up surpassing the “naturally talented” singers who didn’t. So if you’ve ever doubted your ability because it doesn’t come naturally—good news: you can absolutely learn this, and your work ethic is your superpower.

Belief #2: “If I’m Scared to Sing in Public, It’s Not for Me”

This one hits home for so many singers. That nervous, insecure feeling you get when someone’s listening? I used to take that as a sign I wasn’t meant to perform. But here’s the truth: wanting to sing in public and being afraid of it can exist at the same time. It’s like being excited to ride a roller coaster—even though it terrifies you.

The key isn’t to throw yourself into terrifying situations and hope you get used to it. That can backfire. The real key is preparation. You need vocal technique that gives you freedom and control. You need to build trust in your voice and regulate your nervous system so your brain stops treating performance like a threat. And you need to tap into your creativity so you can express yourself authentically. These three areas—voice, mindset, and creativity—are what help you feel confident singing in public.

Belief #3: “Hoarseness After Singing Is Normal”

If you’ve ever felt hoarse after singing and just brushed it off as normal, please don’t. Hoarseness is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. Maybe you’re pushing too hard, singing too loud, or using techniques that aren’t serving you. It’s not just “tiredness”—it’s vocal cord swelling, and it’s not something to ignore.

The good news? With the right vocal technique, you can sing for hours without any hoarseness. Vocal health is possible. You just need to listen to your body and train your voice properly.

Let’s Shift From Limiting to Empowering

To recap, these are the three limiting beliefs we covered in this episode:

  1. “You either have talent or you don’t” → Singing is a skill, and consistency is your strength.

  2. “I’m insecure singing in public, so it’s not for me” → Performance confidence is something you can train.

  3. “Hoarseness after singing is normal” → It’s not, and with the right techniques, you can avoid it entirely.

Your vocal journey deserves more than outdated beliefs that hold you back. You deserve to step into your voice with freedom, confidence, and joy.
