Vocal Warm Up for Singers: Release Tension in Minutes

vocal workouts Apr 16, 2026

Ever feel like your voice just isn’t cooperating and being tight, strained, or not fully “there”? In this episode, you’ll discover five powerful warm-up exercises that help you release tension and sing with ease, freedom, and confidence. Let’s dive in.

Start with Your Body, Not Just Your Voice

Before jumping into vocal exercises, this episode highlights something many singers overlook: your body directly affects your voice. Releasing tension in your shoulders, neck, and jaw helps free up your sound.

Simple stretches, gentle shaking, and even facial movements like “big face, small face” activate and relax the muscles around your larynx. It might feel silly—but it works.

Activate and Release Jaw Tension

Next, we focus on the jaw—one of the biggest tension holders. By exaggerating chewing motions, moving the tongue in full circles, and stretching it outward, you intentionally build a bit of tension… just to release it right after.

This contrast helps your body recognize what “relaxed” actually feels like.

Lip Trills for Gentle Vocal Warm-Up

Lip trills are a go-to exercise to start warming up the voice without strain. They encourage proper breath support and prevent you from pushing your voice.

If lip trills feel difficult, that’s not a failure—it’s feedback. It may point to an opportunity to improve your breath support technique.

Yawn-Based Sounds for Instant Release

One of the most effective ways to relax your voice is by mimicking a yawn. In this episode, you use an “ah” vowel while maintaining that open, relaxed yawn feeling.

This naturally lowers tension and creates space for a freer, fuller sound—without forcing anything.

Vocal Fry: Reset Your Vocal Cords

Vocal fry—the creaky, “frog-like” sound—might seem unusual, but it’s incredibly effective. It brings your vocal cords together in a relaxed way, helping to reset them when tension is present.

From there, you gently transition into singing a note, keeping that relaxed foundation as you move upward.

Build Control with a Musical Exercise

The final exercise ties everything together using a simple phrase: “Relax, take it easy, for there is nothing that we can do.”

This exercise trains you to move between chest voice and mix or head voice smoothly, while staying grounded and relaxed. It’s not just about technique—it’s about feeling the message and letting that guide your voice.

Warming Up Is Just the Beginning

By now, you’ve warmed up your voice and released a significant amount of tension. But this episode makes one thing clear: warming up alone isn’t enough.

To truly improve your singing, you need a structured approach—where each vocal technique builds on the previous one, just like constructing a solid foundation before building higher.
