Top 3 Vocal Exercises for Range Expansion

vocal workouts Mar 19, 2026

How can you expand your vocal range without cracking, feeling stuck, or straining your voice? In this episode, you’ll discover three powerful exercises designed to strengthen both your low and high notes so you can sing with greater freedom and flexibility.

Exercise 1: Vocal Fry for Lower Notes

The first exercise targets the lower part of your range using vocal fry.

Vocal fry is the croaky, “frog-like” sound you can make at the bottom of your voice. It happens when the vocal cords come together and become thicker, which helps produce deeper tones.

Try it like this:

  1. Start with a gentle vocal fry sound:
    “Ahhh…”

  2. If that’s difficult, add two small glottal onsets first:
    “Uh-uh… ah.”

  3. Once the fry starts, move to a note and slide downward.

The pattern becomes:

  • Fry

  • Note

  • Slide down

This exercise encourages the vocal cords to close properly and helps you access those lower notes with ease rather than forcing them.

Exercise 2: Lip Trills for Higher Notes

Now we move to the top half of your range.

For this, we use lip trills, a well-known SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercise. Lip trills help lengthen the vocal cords and reduce tension, which makes it easier to access higher notes without pushing.

Here’s how the exercise works:

  1. Start with a lip trill sound:
    “Brrrr…”

  2. Glide upward.

  3. Release the trill into an “oo” sound on the top note.

Why this works:

  • Lip trills prevent you from pushing your voice

  • They naturally guide the voice into head voice

  • The “oo” vowel helps activate the muscles needed for higher notes

If lip trills are difficult, you can gently place your fingers in the corners of your mouth to help your lips stay loose.

Exercise 3: Activating the “Coughing Muscle” for Breath Support

The third exercise focuses on breath support, which is essential for singing both high and low notes.

In this episode, Maggie refers to something called the “coughing muscle.” This isn’t the official anatomical name, but it describes a muscle around the abdominal area (related to the transverse abdominal muscles) that activates when you cough.

To locate it:

  1. Place one finger on your navel.

  2. Put your other hand just below it.

  3. Cough lightly.

You should feel a quick outward movement in that lower abdominal area. That’s the muscle we want to activate when singing.

Now try the exercise:

“He he he ha”

Each “he” and “ha” activates that muscle, creating rhythmic abdominal movement.

While practicing:

  • When you inhale, the belly expands

  • When you sing, the belly moves inward

  • The coughing muscle activates outward

This coordination builds stronger breath support, which makes it easier to stabilize both high and low notes.

Consistency Is the Key to Expanding Your Range

These three exercises work because they target different parts of the voice:

  • Vocal fry develops low notes

  • Lip trills strengthen high notes

  • Breath support stabilizes the entire range

The real results come from consistent practice. Returning to these exercises regularly trains the voice gradually and safely, allowing you to expand your range over time.
