Singing Tutorial: 2 Simple Exercises for Perfect Pitch
Apr 23, 2026Want to stop second-guessing your notes and start singing with confidence? In this episode, you'll learn two simple but powerful exercises that can dramatically improve your pitch accuracy when practiced consistently. The secret isn’t complexity, it’s repetition done with intention. Enjoy!
Why Many Singers Stay Off Pitch
Before improving pitch, let's look at the three common mistakes beginner singers make...
1. Singing Before Knowing the Note
Many singers open their mouths before they even know what should be sung, hoping they’ll magically land on the right pitch.
2. Thinking Technique Alone Fixes Pitch
Some singers believe one vocal trick will solve everything. While technique matters, pitch issues often come from deeper causes.
3. Replaying Songs Without Training the Skill
Listening to songs repeatedly can help familiarity, but it doesn’t automatically train pitch control.
What Trained Singers Do Differently
A trained singer develops three important skills:
- They internally hear the note before singing it
- They intentionally practice intervals
- They separate ear training from vocal technique
That distinction is powerful. Sometimes your ear knows the note, but your voice needs better technique to produce it.
Exercise 1: Train Intervals Daily
The first exercise focuses on intervals, which are simply the distance between two notes.
Some intervals are small. Others are large. Songs are built from these melodic jumps and steps.
Examples:
- “Let It Be” uses easier stepwise movement
- “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” begins with a large leap
The better you know intervals, the easier melodies become.
How to Practice the Interval Ladder
Start with counting patterns:
- 1 2 1
- 1 2 3 2 1
- 1 2 3 4 3 2 1
- Continue upward until 8, then descend
Why 8? Because the major scale contains eight notes.
You can use your fingers or even visualize a clock face if numbers help you stay organized.
Level Up: Stop Following and Start Leading
Once you can sing along with guidance, practice the same patterns without following another voice.
Now, here's something important:
As a singer, you need to lead, not depend on following the original artist.
This develops:
- Confidence
- Independence
- Better pitch control
- More authentic performance energy
Reverse the Exercise for More Growth
Now begin from the top:
- 8 7 8
- 8 7 6 7 8
- Continue downward to 1
This reverse version challenges your ear even more and sharpens your melodic awareness.
Exercise 2: Internal Hearing Before Singing
The second exercise is all about internal hearing, mentally hearing the pitch before making sound.
This is a game-changing skill.
Before singing any note, your brain should already know what it sounds like.
How the Internal Hearing Game Works
Here's your task:
- Hear it internally (silently in your mind)
- Then sing it out loud
So you “sing” twice:
- First in your mind
- Then with your actual voice
That process creates much stronger pitch accuracy.
Why This Exercise Might Feel Challenging
If this feels difficult, that’s normal.
Internal hearing is an advanced skill, but it can be trained. The more you practice it, the easier it becomes to sing in tune consistently.
When Pitch Problems Are Actually Technique Problems
Sometimes you know exactly what note should be sung, but your voice doesn’t reach it.
That often points to vocal technique issues such as:
- Wrong register
- Poor breath support
- Tension
- Lack of coordination
This is where technical training becomes essential.
The Fastest Way to Improve Pitch
Combine these three things:
- Daily interval practice
- Internal hearing exercises
- Strong vocal technique
That combination creates singers who don’t just hope to sing on pitch, they know how.
