May 07, 2026Can't hit those high notes without straining? This 10-minute follow-along vocal warm up will help you extend your range safely without tension or forcing your voice. Sing along with me and feel the difference by the end. Perfect for beginners and intermediate singers who want to sing higher without damaging their voice.
Why High Notes Feel So Hard (And What Most Singers Get Wrong)
Before jumping into the exercises, it’s important to understand why high notes often feel difficult. Many singers try to push their chest voice higher and sing louder as they go up—but that only creates tension. Others skip warming up entirely or assume that higher notes require more effort, instead of better coordination.
The truth? Singing higher is about balance, not force. And that’s where a trained approach makes all the difference.
Think Like a Trained Singer
Instead of forcing your voice, a trained singer learns how to blend chest voice and head voice into what’s called the mix voice. This allows for smooth transitions between registers and makes high notes feel lighter, freer, and more controlled.
In this episode, you’ll train that coordination step by step.
Exercise 1: Straw Slides for a Tension-Free Start
We begin with a SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercise using a straw. By singing through a straw, you create gentle resistance that helps your vocal cords work efficiently without strain.
Glide from low to high notes using the straw. This stretches your vocal cords safely and warms up your voice in a controlled way. No straw? Use a “vv” sound or imagine blowing through one while keeping your cheeks slightly puffed.
Exercise 2: Open Up Your Sound on the High Note
Now we build on that same sliding exercise—but with a twist. When you reach the top note, remove the straw and open into an “ooh” sound.
Keep everything in one breath. This is key. Breathing in between resets your vocal coordination, and we want to maintain that connection as you transition into an open sound.
This step helps you carry that relaxed feeling into real singing.
Exercise 3: Lip Trills Across Your Range
Next, we move into lip trills on an octave-and-a-half scale. This exercise connects your chest voice, mix voice, and head voice in one smooth motion.
Lip trills are another form of SOVT, which means you physically can’t push or strain your voice. That’s exactly why they’re so effective—they guide you into proper technique automatically.
Exercise 4: Release Into an Open Tone
Now take that lip trill and apply the same concept as before: once you reach the top note, release into an open vowel.
This teaches your voice to stay relaxed even when the notes get higher. Instead of gripping or pushing, you learn to let go and allow the sound to resonate freely.
Exercise 5: Activate Your Mix Voice
The final exercise focuses on consciously finding your mix voice. Start in your head voice, then add a touch of “twang”—a bright, focused sound that helps your voice cut through without extra effort.
This combination activates both your chest and head voice muscles at the same time, creating that balanced mix. It’s a more advanced step, so listen closely to your body. If you feel tension, pain, or hoarseness, that’s your cue to adjust.
Listen to Your Voice—It Knows
Throughout these exercises, your body gives you feedback. If something feels off, it probably is. Singing should never hurt. Stay aware, stay curious, and focus on ease over effort.
Build Real Progress in Just 7 Days
