Technique 1: Breath Support – The Foundation of Everything
Breath support is the number one technique you need to master if you want to sound like a pro. In this episode, Maggie explains that breath support consists of two key elements: diaphragmatic breathing and activating the coughing muscle (the transversus abdominis).
When you breathe in correctly, your belly expands as the diaphragm drops to make space for the lungs. When you sing, the belly gently comes back in. Combine that with the activation of the coughing muscle, and you create stable, controlled airflow. Fix the breath, and many vocal problems simply disappear.
Technique 2: Mix Voice – Power Without Strain
Many singers want powerful high notes, but end up pushing their chest voice too far. That’s where strain and tension creep in. Maggie explains that your mix voice is the combination of your chest voice muscle (power) and head voice muscle (pitch).
By blending these two, you can sing higher notes with strength and ease. Mastering mix voice allows you to move smoothly through your range without hitting a ceiling or forcing your sound.
Technique 3: Internal Hearing – Your Vocal GPS
Singing on pitch starts before you even make a sound. If you don’t clearly hear the note or melody in your mind, your voice has nothing to aim for. That’s why training your internal hearing is essential.
In this episode, Maggie describes simple exercises where you hear a note internally first, then sing it, and finally check yourself. Internal hearing works like a GPS: it defines the destination. Your vocal technique then becomes the vehicle that gets you there.
Technique 4: Resonance Space – Shaping Your Unique Sound
Your resonance space (or vocal tract) is the distance between your vocal cords and your lips. By adjusting elements like your larynx position, soft palate, tongue, and mouth shape, you can dramatically change your tone.
This is where artistry comes in. Once you’re in control of your resonance space, you can intentionally create warmer, brighter, lighter, or fuller sounds. That control is a clear sign of vocal mastery.
The Vocal Technique Backpack
Maggie ties everything together with the idea of a vocal technique backpack. Breath support, mix voice, internal hearing, and resonance space are the core tools that belong in every singer’s backpack. But they’re just the beginning.
When you struggle with a song—whether it’s a high note, long phrase, or tricky melody—you open that backpack and choose the technique that serves your voice in that moment.
Talent Isn’t the Point — Training Is
This episode makes one thing very clear: great singing isn’t about talent. It’s about training the right things and staying consistent. With the right foundations in place, progress becomes inevitable.
