How To Sing Better: 5 Quick Vocal Tips

vocal technique Feb 26, 2026

How do you actually sing better without years of training or expensive lessons? That’s one of the biggest questions I get from singers who just want real progress without overcomplicating everything. In this episode, you'll discover powerful tools that can shift your voice almost immediately.

Tool #1: Master Your Breath Support

If there’s one thing that fixes most vocal issues, it’s breath support. Honestly, 90% of the struggles I see—tension, breathiness, lack of power, limited range—come back to this one thing.

For me, breath support consists of two parts: diaphragmatic breathing and activating what I like to call your “coughing muscle” (officially the transversus abdominis). When you inhale, your diaphragm lowers, your belly expands, and you create space for the air. When you sing, you combine that controlled release of air with the gentle engagement of your lower abdominal support.

When those two work together, everything changes. You’ll feel more stable. You’ll sound more powerful. And you’ll stop pushing so hard for notes that should feel free.

Tool #2: Expand Your Resonance with the “Bite” Technique

Your voice has a resonance space, just like a guitar. And when you change that space, you change your sound.

In this episode, I introduce the “bite” technique. Imagine holding a big, juicy apple and taking a huge bite out of it. That position—slightly lowered larynx and gently lifted soft palate—creates more space in your vocal tract.

What happens when you sing like that?
The sound becomes warmer.
More open.
Less squeezed.
Less tense.

So many singers raise their larynx on high notes and unintentionally create strain. But when you expand instead of squeeze, those high notes feel freer and more supported.

Tool #3: Let Go of Technique (At the Right Time)

This one might surprise you.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do is stop thinking about technique and focus on storytelling and emotion. But here’s the key: you only let go after you’ve practiced the technique enough for it to live in your muscle memory.

If you’re constantly thinking “support, bite, twang, breath…” you’re stuck in your head. Singing is expression. It’s emotion. It’s storytelling.

The goal is to train your voice so well that technique becomes automatic. Then you can fully focus on delivering the message of the song.

Tool #4: Practice Consistently (Not Perfectly)

Consistency doesn’t mean practicing every single day. It means creating a rhythm that works for your life.

If you can practice daily, amazing.
If you can practice once a week, that’s okay too.

But you need a consistent rhythm.

Why? Because consistency is what builds muscle memory. And muscle memory is what allows you to stop overthinking and start expressing.

There’s no right or wrong amount. There’s only being intentional about your choice and understanding that more consistency equals faster progress.

Tool #5: Train Your Mix Voice

This is a big one.

When you sing, two main muscle systems are involved: one responsible for power (chest voice) and one responsible for height (head voice). Many singers try to belt high notes by pushing chest voice upward. That’s where tension and strain come from.

Your mix voice is the balance between those two systems—power and height working together.

And here’s the important part: mix voice is not talent. It’s trainable. You build it by strengthening your breath support, learning how to activate both muscle systems, and combining them intentionally.

Think of it like building a backpack full of tools. Breath support goes in. Resonance control goes in. Muscle coordination goes in. Then, when you need them, you open that backpack and use exactly what the song requires.

It’s Not About Talent. It’s About Skill.

The biggest takeaway from this episode? Singing better isn’t about being “naturally gifted.” It’s about learning specific techniques, practicing them consistently, and trusting them enough to express your heart.

You don’t need years of confusion.
You don’t need to strain your way through high notes.
And you definitely don’t need to guess your way forward.
