Hit High Notes Without Straining Your Voice

vocal technique Apr 30, 2026

Want to hit high notes without straining your voice? In this video, you'll learn exactly how to sing high notes with ease: no tension, no vocal strain, and no damage to your voice.

Why Most Singers Struggle With High Notes

Many singers assume that hitting high notes means pushing harder. They try to drag chest voice higher and higher, only to feel like they hit a ceiling.

The result?

  • Tightness in the throat
  • A squeezed or shouty sound
  • Hoarseness after singing
  • Cracking or flipping unexpectedly

High notes should not require force. If they do, something needs to change.

The Two Big Mistakes Singers Make

1. Pushing Chest Voice Too High

Chest voice naturally gives strength and presence. But if you rely on it too heavily in the upper range, tension builds fast.

This is one of the biggest reasons singers feel stuck.

2. Avoiding Head Voice Completely

Many singers avoid head voice because it feels weak, airy, unstable, or hard to control.

Maggie shares that she used to avoid head voice too—but avoiding it only delays progress. If you never train it, you can’t strengthen it.

What Mix Voice Actually Is

Mix voice is the coordination between chest voice and head voice.

It blends:

  • The power of chest voice
  • The height and flexibility of head voice

That combination allows you to sing high notes with strength, ease, and control.

Without mix voice, singers often overuse one register and create tension, breathiness, or a limited range.

Understanding the Voice in Simple Terms

Maggie explains two main muscular functions involved in singing:

Chest Voice Function

This helps shorten and bring the vocal cords together, which creates:

  • Strength
  • Volume
  • A fuller sound

Head Voice Function

This helps lengthen the vocal cords, which creates:

  • Higher pitches
  • Easier upper notes
  • More flexibility

If you want high notes with power, both functions must work together.

That’s mix voice.

The First Step to Mastering Mix Voice

Before doing advanced exercises, you need to know:

Which register do you naturally rely on the most right now?

That is called your dominant register.

If you don’t know whether you mostly sing in chest voice or head voice, you may spend months—or years—training the wrong thing.

Simple Exercise to Discover Your Dominant Register

Step 1: Find Chest Voice

Choose a comfortable lower note and sing:

Ahhh

Now place your hand on your chest.

Ask yourself:

  • Do you feel vibration?
  • Does it feel like speaking voice?
  • Does it sound fuller and stronger?

That’s chest voice.

Step 2: Find Head Voice

Now call out:

Yoo-hoo!

Notice:

  • Less chest vibration
  • A lighter tone
  • Sensation in the face, nose, forehead, or head area

That’s head voice.

Step 3: Use a Familiar Song

Now sing the chorus of Let It Be.

As you sing, notice:

  • Am I mainly using chest voice?
  • Am I mainly using head voice?
  • Which feels more natural?

Your answer reveals your dominant register.

Why This Matters So Much

Once you know your dominant register, you know what needs attention.

If chest voice dominates, you likely need more head voice development.

If head voice dominates, you may need stronger chest connection.

This awareness saves time, frustration, and guesswork.

What Comes Next

There are four phases to mastering mix voice. This episode focuses on the first phase: awareness and assessment.

The next phases involve:

  • Balancing both registers
  • Strengthening coordination
  • Creating a smooth blend
  • Building the sound you want

That’s where true vocal freedom begins.
