Do You Squeeze On High Notes? Watch This!
Jun 25, 2026Do you feel your throat tighten the moment you go for a high note? That tension, that squeeze, is the #1 thing holding singers back from a free, powerful upper range.
In this episode, you'll discover exactly why squeezing happens, what it's doing to your voice, and the simple technique shift that lets you hit high notes without strain or tension.
Why High Notes Start to Feel Squeezed
A lot of singers try to reach high notes by pushing their chest voice higher and higher. But instead of creating power, this often creates strain.
Another common mistake is avoiding the transition into head voice completely. Maybe your head voice feels shaky, breathy, wobbly, or out of control, so you keep relying on chest voice instead.
But powerful high notes don’t come from chest voice alone. They come from learning how to blend chest voice and head voice together.
The Two Muscles You Need for High Notes
To sing high notes with power, two vocal muscles need to work together.
One muscle brings the vocal cords together, which creates power. This is what we can call the chest voice muscle.
The other muscle lengthens the vocal cords, which helps create higher pitches. This is what we can call the head voice muscle.
When one of these muscles is doing all the work, you’ll often feel squeezing, flipping, breathiness, or strain. The goal is to train both so they can work together in your mix voice.
Step One: Find Your Dominant Register
The first step is to identify which register is currently dominant.
Try a simple slide on “ah,” going from low to high and back down again. Notice what happens.
If your voice cracks or flips on the way up, you may be chest voice dominant. If your high notes feel easy but your low notes sound breathy or weak, you may be head voice dominant. If you can move smoothly up and down, you may already have a natural mix voice.
Step Two: Strengthen the Weaker Register
Once you know your dominant register, the next step is to train the opposite one.
If you’re chest voice dominant, strengthen your head voice. If you’re head voice dominant, strengthen your chest voice.
Both muscles need to become strong enough to work together. Otherwise, the dominant one will keep taking over.
Chest Voice Exercise: “Ma”
To strengthen chest voice, use a clear and grounded “ma” sound.
Place your hand on your chest if that helps you feel the vibration. Keep the sound connected, steady, and speech-like.
This exercise helps build the strength and presence needed in your lower register.
Head Voice Exercise: “You”
To strengthen head voice, use a light “you” sound and slide up and down.
The key is to keep it easy. No pushing, no squeezing, no forcing.
Start light and let the voice move freely.
Blending Exercise: “Go”
The final exercise brings both registers together.
Start in chest voice on “go,” slide up into head voice, and then come back down into chest voice. The most important part is always returning to chest voice.
This teaches your voice to move between registers until they eventually begin working together more naturally.
Practice for Five Days
These exercises become powerful when you do them consistently.
Try practicing them for the next five days and simply notice what changes in your voice. You don’t need to force progress. You just need to give your voice the right training.
