Daily Vocal Warmup Routine (10 Minutes!)

vocal workouts Mar 05, 2026

Wondering how to warm up your voice quickly and effectively without wasting time on random exercises? In this episode, I’m walking you through a simple 10-minute vocal warm-up routine you can use every single day. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Gently Wake Up the Voice (SOVT Slides)

Let’s start with an SOVT exercise (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract). I’m using a straw, but you can use:

  • A Lax Vox tube

  • A simple plastic straw

  • A lip trill

  • Or even a “vvv” sound

We begin with gentle slides. Smooth, easy glides through your range to softly wake up the voice.

This first step:

  • Gets the vocal cords moving

  • Encourages balanced airflow

  • Warms up the voice without strain

No pushing. No forcing. Just smooth, connected sound.

Step 2: Lip Trills for Relaxation & Support

Next up: lip trills.

If lip trills are difficult, lightly place your fingers in the corners of your mouth—not too far back, not too far up—just enough to help your lips relax and vibrate freely.

A quick side note: if lip trills feel hard, it could point to a lack of proper breath support. That’s something to explore later—but right now, we’re focusing on warming up.

Lip trills help:

  • Release tension

  • Activate breath flow

  • Prepare the voice for fuller sound

You should already start feeling more warmed up at this point.

Step 3: Activate Chest Voice with Vocal Fry

Now we open up the sound using vocal fry.

Vocal fry helps the vocal cords come together efficiently. Start with a gentle fry sound (“ah”), and if that’s tricky, try adding two small glottal onsets first.

From there:

  • Go from vocal fry into a clear note

  • Then move up to the next note and back down

  • Stay in chest voice

The goal is to keep the vocal cords short and connected. We’re strengthening coordination here—without pushing.

By the end of this section, your chest voice should feel active and grounded.

Step 4: Activate Head Voice

Now let’s switch gears.

Give me a light, enthusiastic “yoohoo.” That’s your head voice.

We use sliding exercises here again, allowing the vocal cords to lengthen. This creates flexibility and balance in your upper register.

At this point:

  • Chest voice is activated

  • Head voice is activated

  • The voice feels more mobile

Now we’re ready to connect everything.

Step 5: Connect with Mix Voice

Time to bring chest and head voice together using mix voice.

Start with a sharp “ye.” Keep it horizontal in placement—don’t push chest voice upward. Instead, begin from head voice and add a bit of sharpness to create that balanced mix.

This is key:

  • No pushing

  • No straining

  • Stay light and forward

We’re coordinating both muscle groups so they work together instead of against each other.

Step 6: Bring It All Together

We finish with a simple “la” exercise—one that you might even recognize.

Here, everything comes together:

  • Chest voice

  • Head voice

  • Mix voice

  • Breath support

This final step integrates all the work you just did.

Virtual high five—you’re officially warmed up.

Singing Is Training—Not Just Talent

Hopefully, this episode showed you that singing isn’t about having some special gift you were born with. It’s about training your voice the right way.

What we did here is just the warm-up. The real transformation happens when you consistently train:

  • Chest voice

  • Head voice

  • Mix voice

  • Breath support

  • Vocal coordination

And knowing which exercises to do—and when to do them—is what truly levels you up.
